| Avoidance | Steering away from reminders of trauma. Brings short-term relief and long-term shrinkage. |
| Behavioral activation | Scheduling value-driven activity before motivation arrives. |
| Complex PTSD | PTSD after prolonged or repeated trauma, with added struggles in emotion, self-worth and relationships. |
| Defusion | Seeing a thought as a thought rather than a fact or an order. |
| Dissociation | Feeling detached from your body, surroundings or time. |
| Exposure | Approaching feared but safe memories or situations until fear decreases. |
| Hyperarousal | Fight-or-flight state: on edge, startled, irritable. |
| Moral injury | Lasting distress from violating, witnessing violations of, or being betrayed regarding your moral code. |
| PCL-5 | A free 20-item PTSD symptom checklist from the VA's National Center for PTSD. |
| PTSI | Post-traumatic stress injury: framing PTSD as an injury that heals. |
| Stuck point | A belief formed by trauma that keeps you stuck; the target of CPT. |
| SUDS | Subjective Units of Distress Scale: rating distress from 0 to 100. |
| Trigger | A reminder that sets off a trauma response. |
| Window of tolerance | The zone where you can feel things and still think clearly. |
